okay, so heroes con in charlotte is coming up quickly!
turns out this year's show is on the weekend of johnny's 3rd birthday, so we're having his party a week earlier (he's only 3, so it's not a big deal.. and heck, he has a party sooner)...i've been heading down to this show for years (only missed it 3 years ago when johnny was born... which was a pretty darn good reason) and always have a great time hanging out with friends like todd and mike (and WAY too many other to name... like you, mr. "can't be a booth boy since megan's gonna be there but we'll gladly keep you around " brian mulcahy) and talking with fans...
wanted to get a piece in the program book (and the theme was either silver surfer or spidey's black costume) so i came up with the one over the weekend...
besides that, i wrapped up my 100 sketch cards for the upcoming topps star wars 30 set (how could i say no?! i'll post'm later, i'm sure) as well as my latest dc licensing gig, so it's back to those commissions (thanks for being patient... oh, and if by some odd coincidence you're on the list and plan on being at heroes (robert?) lemme know if you want me to bring the piece and get it in person)...
we managed to get out and see knocked up this weekend as well (i absolutely loved it - but ithen again, i thought freaks and geeks was the best tv show in years ... trish, not as much) and got to watch some of the sox-yankees series (even losing 2, boston's still got a healthy lead )...
if you're a comics fan and reading this, i'm sure you check out ringo's blog... and WOW, is that new set-up sweet (makes me wanna redo my sitre... someday)...
well, back to work on this rainy monday morning...

I'm definitely looking forward to Heroes Con. I'm taking my entire family to Toronto this week, just so I can go to that con. Heroes the next weekend will be a much-needed vacation after that. I always try to find a con to go away to over Father's Day weekend as a gift to myself. See you there.
That's because "Freaks and Geeks" WAS the best TV show in years! Damn shame it only lasted 1 season (though it was kind of fitting how the last episode ended). Things like that make me glad that Arrested Development lasted 3 seasons.
Wow, Craig, I love your Spidey Black. It's got a very cool illustration vibe to it. I'd like to see more stuff from you in this style.
Looking forward to seeing you guys down in Charlotte and a very happy early B-Day to Johnny.
As for the Red Sox, it would have been nice to win the Sunday Night/Monday Morning game, but since 2000 these guys have been playing each other just about even and it looks like this year will be no different. The Sox won the first two series 5 games to 1 and lost the next two serieses 2 games to 4. The have a 7 to 5 game edge over the Yanks head to head and if they just split the remaining six games they'll win the season series 10 games to 8. As in the past 6 years, what will decide the division is how well each team does against everyone else. So far, the Sox have been getting the job done while the Yanks have been dropping games left and right.
Given the Yanks problems with their 4 and 5 starters, not to mention how poorly Moose has been pitching, it will be very hard for them to put together any type of sustained winning streak. The opposite is true of the Sox. Given their starters, I don't see them experiencing any prolonged losing streaks. Consequently, it will be awfully hard for the Yanks to get out of the early season hole they dug themselves.
Great Spidey sir!!
Great Spiderman, Craig! I hope you enjoy the show this year. One of these years I'm gonna get down there for this show, as I've heard a lot of good things about it.
Great piece CR! BTW, Dice-K vs Lenny DeNardo tonight! OMG Lenny (I suck) DeNardo as a starter! Holy Crap!
Mk
Was it just me, or did DiNardo look bigger last night?
Good start from Dice-K, but the bats were cold as ice. A hit from Lowell in the first inning would have made all the difference and he certainly got a pitch to drive, but it sounded like his bat cracked on that fly out to right.
A little bump in the road, lets hope Wake can get the boys back on track tonight.
took the words right outta my mouth, brian (see what ya get with comments likethat, mark? dinardo pitched 6 shut out innings! dice-k was solid, but no runs to back him up...) bats haven't been making the hits they need in clutch spots lately, hope they can get outta this little slump (losing 5 outta 6... ouch)...
Great lookin' Spidey Craig!
While I won't be able to make it to Heroes, as much as I wanted to go, I'd love to pick up the Gwen commission in Baltimore if it's done by then (and I think I saw you listed as going, so please correct me if I'm wrong!)
Thanks!
I sorry. My fault. Blame me. Come on...this is Lenny Dinardo who sucked swamp water for us! Jeez! My opinion of Dice-K is still up in the air. He's not this phenom that we were promised. Speaking of over-paid...J.D. Drew. $70 million for a guy who's barely hitting! Willy Mo (lunkhead) Pena is doing better than Drew. Dustin P!? What the heck fired him up? Maybe the chance of losing his position to Alex Cora scared the bujeezus out of him and now he's really trying. I'm hoping Wakefield can confuse Oakland, if not we're in trouble with the Yankees winning last night against Chicago.
Mk
No question that Drew is mired in a deep funk slump, but he's got a long term big bucks contract that forces the team to give him every chance in the world to succeed.
Could Willy Mo Pena, who is still only in his early 20's, become an everyday major leaguer if given enough at bats? Maybe, but he is a man without a position on this team as the DH spot is locked up and his pourous defense makes it impossible to have him replace Coco in center, no matter how poorly Coco hits, and no way do they give up on J.D. at this point, not only because of the money, but because J.D., unlike Willy, has proven that, when healthy, he can be a solid No. 5 hitter in the majors.
Here's a question...if we do lose Manny next year after his contract expires, who do we look at to replace him? Do we ponder a Matsui...or do we look National League?
Mk
MK,
I believe you can take the "if" out of the equation with Manny because there are two option years at the end of Manny's current contract in the twenty million dollar range that I don't see the team picking up and I don't see Manny staying after they "disrespect" him by not picking up his option. Plus, given Management's attitude toward Manny, I'd say that you have a better chance of seeing A-Rod in Boston before you see Manny here after 2008.
As for Matsui, he's signed through 2009 with the Yanks and isn't available.
Tori Hunter and Andruw Jones will be available as free agents for 2008, so you could sign one of them and make Coco your back up outfielder for one year and then have him in left for one year or use him as a back-up again and give one of the guys down at Pawtucket, Jacoby Elsbury, David Murphy or Brandon Moss, a chance to come up and show what he can do. You might also be able to trade Coco based on his defense, but you'd have to eat some of the 10.5 million he's scheduled to make over the last two years of his current deal. (4.75 in 2008 and 5.75 in 2009).
J.D. Drew, however, is not going anywhere. He is signed through 2011 at an average of 14 million per year, so he'll be your right fielder in 2009 and beyond. (The Red Sox do have the ability to void the last two years of Drew's contract, but only if he suffers a significant injury to his right shoulder. Consequently, lets hope he starts playing up to his contract as he'd be the highest priced 4th outfielder in the league if you have to replace him with Elsbury, Murphy of Moss)
Thanks Brian,
What a baseball education I just got. I must say Mr. Drew did very well last night with 2 3run homers. Must be the air in Arizona.
